In 1973, two young inventors were approached by a lady who had been repeatedly burgled and desperately wanted a solution. To meet the brief, the entrepreneurs created a unique four-way lock, comparable to those found on airline doors at the time. From this they began to offer a full service, which involved taking down the existing door leaf, upgrading the security by installing one of their newly designed four–way locks and then re-hanging the door. The pair went into partnership and developed a significant market share, upgrading all the timber doors to steel and incorporating the then patented four way lock.

In 1977, Mul-T-Lock started developing patented cylinder systems after identifying the cylinder as the weak point in the doorset. By 1982, Mul-T-Lock had greatly expanded its product line to include a wide range of cylinders, locks and High Security accessories.

By 1986, Mul-T-Lock had focused on the UK market and identified the gap in the market to open up locksmiths as ‘mini manufacturing’ centres, akin to how we know them to exist today.

Today, Mul-T-Lock UK, a trading division of ASSA ABLOY UK, has become a leading supplier, distributing high security locks and access control systems throughout the UK and Ireland. The company’s product portfolio remains testament to its commitment to the locksmith industry, both now and in the future, as envisaged by Mul-T-Lock’s founders.
